The legendary master of soulful Drum & Bass returns to Los Angeles! On Friday October 15th, Bassrush presents LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad live at the House of Blues Sunset Strip as part of their Autumn 2010 US tour.
I’ve played with LTJ Bukem several times and it’s always an amazing experience for me. His ability to build a unique vibe no matter where he plays coupled with MC Conrad’s one-of-a-kind vocals keeps the duo in the #1 spot for my favorite live act. If you’ve never seen them perform live, please do yourself a favor and attend this show – if you’re into deep house, soul music, liquid funk, or any of the other deeper electronic music genres I promise you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourself at this event.
If that’s not enough for you, my brothers in bass Pure Filth are hosting the Foundation Room with a solid lineup of the best dubstep Los Angeles has to offer.
Over the coming weeks I’ll be featuring content focused on LTJ Bukem, his label Good Looking Records, and the genres of liquid funk and atmospheric drum and bass. Also, keep your eyes peeled for ticket giveaways and other goodies!
I’m happy to announce the release of my latest mix and the start of the brand new Deceast Mix Series! I’ll be releasing these mixes periodically, usually with myself at the controls but with the occasional installment featuring the sounds of Deceast friends and collaborators. #001 features nearly 80 minutes of high-quality dubstep comprised of my favorite releases over the past few months with several exclusives included as well. I’ll be doing very limited CD runs of these mixes, so if you want a physical copy all you need to do is show up to one of my gigs and ask me for one! Lastly, If you like what you hear, make sure to share it with your friends!
I’m happy to once again be playing for the SMOG crew on Tuesday August 10th at The Echo in LA. For this installment of SMOG Sessions, they’ve got Truth coming all the way from New Zealand for a stop during their debut US tour. It all starts at 10PM and there’s only a $5 cover if you RSVP in advance! Also on the lineup is the LA D&B legend DJ Machete from Respect, slowing things down from the 170BPM range and flexing his dubstep sound.
To give crowds a taste of what’s to come, the guys from Truth recorded a special USA Tour mix with plenty of their own productions mixed in with the newest from other producers:

The official video for “MmmHmm” feat. Thundercat, from the latest Flying Lotus album Cosmogramma. Between this and the latest video from Blockhead, it’s a real shame MTV no longer plays music videos.
Too Much Joy was an alt-rock band that gained a good following throughout the 90s off the heels of their numerous albums, including humor-laden titles such as Green Eggs and Crack and Dr. Seuss Is Dead. After gaining the attention of Warner Bros. Records, they signed to the major label to release their 1991 album Cereal Killers. What transpires between Too Much Joy and Warner Bros. Records after that is a great lesson in the eccentricities of the music industry that should be included in every “Introduction To The Music Business” class offered at colleges and universities around the world.
At the end of 2009, the band received a royalty statement from Warner that details the digital sales of their Warner-controlled music. Thankfully, Too Much Joy celebrate transparency and posted an extremely detailed, thoughtful, and funny explanation of their experience with Warner and the ensuing royalty statement. I highly encourage you to give it a thorough read as it eloquently illustrates what I feel is the type of behavior that is rapidly leading to the end of the major label era in recorded music.
Mavaru, a new web platform that allows artists to sell their music using a pay-what-you-want pricing model, has just launched into public beta. In addition to great design and solid technology, Mavaru is a welcome addition to the music industry landscape. While it’s understandable for people in music to be nervous about new platforms like Mavaru that upend traditional business models, I think what they’re doing is important in light of the fact that these traditional business models aren’t really working anymore (and haven’t for some time). Whether Mavaru has hit on a successful formula or not is yet to be seen, but I’ll certainly be watching to see how things unfold for them in the future.
If you’re not familiar with the pay-what-you-want pricing model, it’s exactly what it sounds like – allowing consumers to decide how much they want to spend for your music. This model first got a lot of attention thanks to how Radiohead released their last full-length album, In Rainbows. Other artists have followed suit, including Girl Talk and Nine Inch Nails.
A couple weeks after the Pure Filth 3yr Anniversary on 4th of July I’ll be playing for the PF crew once again as they throw another Bassface event, this time featuring one of the founding fathers of dubstep, Hatcha. It all goes down at Lot 613, Downtown LA’s premier permitted warehouse venue. With the massive Pure Filth rig booming away all night along with a full bar and food selection, this should be a perfect summer session in downtown’s industrial landscape.
I’ll be playing at Pure Filth’s 3 year anniversary celebration on July 4th, 2010 at The Airliner in Downtown LA. I’m very happy to be a part of the celebration and I hope you’ll be able to make it out amidst all the other 4th of July goings-on in and around Los Angeles this year. As you can see from the poster above, the lineup is pretty ridiculous.
